Mary Binegar

Mary E. Binegar is a candidate for the State Board of Education in District 5, which encompasses 15 Ohio counties and a portion of one other county. She is seeking this position due to her lifelong passion and dedication to public education, believing firmly that the public education system is the bedrock of democracy. The recent pandemic has highlighted many inequities in the current system that she believes must be addressed.

Mary earned her Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Ohio State University and her Master’s in Secondary Education from the University of Dayton. With a professional career spanning 35 years, her focus has consistently been on meeting the educational needs of students.

EXPERIENCE

Throughout her career, most of her activism was through the Ohio Education Association (OEA). As an active member, she served as president or vice president of the Urbana Association of Classroom Teachers for 20 years. She also held positions on the OEA Board of Directors and the National Education Association (NEA) Board of Directors. Additionally, she was an OEA representative on the State Advisory Panel for Exceptional Children and the Committee of Practitioners, both of which collaborated directly with Ohio Department of Education staff and State Board of Education members.

Now retired, Mary remains active in the OEA, currently serving as Chair of the OEA-Retired group. This group’s mission is to promote quality public education for every child, regardless of their zip code or income level. The group supports active colleagues, advocates for legislation that protects and advances public education, and works to preserve pension and benefits for a comfortable retirement.

Mary believes that, if elected to the State Board of Education, her role would be to listen to the concerns of students, parents, and educators, and to recommend policies and procedures that address the educational needs of all students across Ohio.

She hopes voters will consider supporting her in the election for the State Board of Education in the 5th District on Tuesday, November 5th.
